New Knights of the Old Republic (3) – CONFIRMED!!!!!

October 25, 2008 by admin

1up.com has been covering the LucasArts/Bioware event, where they finally announced their upcoming “Secret Project”.

The outcome:

There will most definitely be some type of Knights of the Old Republic. They talked about making it into an MMO as well as mentioning that there might be some type of Knights of the Old Repulbic 3 for Star Wars fans that don’t like MMO’s.

Companions will be available in the game and a HK-47 pet was mentioned. Apparently this game is supposed to make BG2 look small. According to the reporter at the event, the title came up as Star Wars: The Old Republic and then they introduced James Ohlen, who was the lead designer on KOTOR and Baldur’s Gate.

It’s supposed to take place 3500 years before movies, 300 years after KOTOR 1 and 2. They talked about about how the art is designed to run across ALL range of PC’s, so that’s a great sign.

According to the reporter at 1up.com have stated:

“So really, all that’s been said and shown is some choppy combat and talks about story stuff without specifics”

When asked about a release date, the answer was, “Some point in the near future”. Apparently there wil be an “Open Beta” at some point and when asked about the classes and races, the answer was:

“Unique ones on each faction, and what are cool things you’ve seen in the movies, and we’ll make classes out of that”

Stay tuned, we’ll be reporting more as it’s released!

Although I think The Old Republic MMO will be successful and fun…. I would have preferred a single-player Adventure RPG with a good story. MMO’s are designed to keep people playing (and paying) so there is never really a conclusion.

No MMO please … I can’t wait for the official announcement though!

This is not what i expected… Idiotic MONEY MAKIN FREAKS…. Screwed force unleashed, now disappoint people who think like me and i’m sure that accounts for about 3/4th of all starwars fans.

–sigh– well this sucks hard……Heres hoping for the “some type of KOTOR 3 for single player fans” that they mentioned, but i’ve got a feeling that with rubes like Hayden Blackman in charge, something like that just isn’t going to happen, no matter how many distraught KOTOR fans immolate themselves in front of the Lucasarts headquarters. in the mean time, i’m just gonna strip naked, curl up into the fetal position and cry myself to sleep. See ya later.

GRRRRR……. sry for ranting, but i mean, srsly, how do they even expect this to work? Bioware makes the best RPGs in the biz, and I trust them – heck, the original KOTOR has THE GREATEST STORY the video game world has ever seen! But how can any developer, even Bioware, pull this off? Yeah, I’m sure they could create a killer MMO, but how do they expect to merge it successfully with the legendary KOTOR storyline?
Picture it this way–A level 60 Jedi Master with glowing power armor and blue hair walks down a street, and meets a level 72 Jedi master carrying a blaster thats almost as big as he is. He also has blue hair.
    -
Jedi#1-Hi! I am the legendary Jedi Master KiLLeRxX9PAWNER3930DeAth34
Jedi#2-Really? I’m also a legendary Jedi! They call me MegaBONG356highdude
Jedi#1-Hey, I’ve been hunting this evil Sith leader, (insert KOTOR MMO antogonist here). Have you seen him around?
Jedi#2-Woah! Small galaxy! Ive been hunting him too!
Jedi#1-L33t! Wanna join my clan? All members get a free psychotic assasian droid.
Jedi#2-Sure, but I already have a psychotic assasian droid-
    Jedi#1-Wait, is his name HK-47?
Jedi#2-Thats EXACTLY what his name is! Are you using your Jedi Mind Powers?
Jedi#1-No, its just that my psychotic assasian droid is named HK-47 too!
    Jedi#1and#2-Were like twins!

What I’m trying to say is that the KOTOR series just isn’t compatible with the standard MMO design, and, as any sensible gamer should be, I’m shocked and disgusted Lucasarts and Bioware could possibly tarnish KOTOR’s greatness with an MMO. Hopefully, all KOTOR fans will make it known to the developers that this is not what we want.

  10. origin478 on Thu, 23rd Oct 2008 12:46 am

WTF??????? I waited a long time to continue the story of Revan and now we get the news that it might be MMO. First KOTOR 2 was a very big disappointment and now making KOTOR 3 an MMO. Screw this!!! I might as well wait for Mass Effect 2…unless they make it MMO too then F*********CK..

  11. Eden on Thu, 23rd Oct 2008 2:21 am

Were is our single player Kotor 3??!!?!?!?!?!? Say no to MMOs!

  12. John Smith on Thu, 23rd Oct 2008 6:50 pm

Please don’t make this an MMO! I’d love to play the next chapter in this series solo with an ending. I’m too old and have too many responsibilities mine ore or chop trees for 20 hours a day. MMOs will be best saved for retirement.

  13. Dean on Thu, 23rd Oct 2008 8:10 pm

There is no KOTOR 3 RPG – they are making an MMO and that’s it. The art style/stylized graphics are horrible. They’re trying to copy WoW cartoony art and the lightsabers look huge! The characters hand only covers half of the width lol. I can’t see myself getting invested in a Star Wars Cartoon game – it just doesn’t fit with the mood/story of KOTOR.

  14. Nicholas on Mon, 27th Oct 2008 11:59 am

    To reven 23456,

It’s obvious this isn’t about what loyal KOTOR supporters want. This is for the SWG junkeys and World of Warcrack heads. Anyone who doesent know that Lucasarts, and Bioware have turned their backs on all of their supporters have yet to see the light. This isn’t KOTOR, this is a last ditch effort to resurrect SWG’s community, and pull in some of WoW’s in the process. They threw the real KOTOR 3 out the window when SWG’s community started whittling down to anemic proportions and Lucasarts started to lose money. So lucasarts hired bioware to save their butts. What do you think that massive layoff was? Just in my opinion, I think they were getting rid of the old KOTOR team to bring in a new team experienced in creating MMO’s. Then again thats just my two cents. But it does seem very likely i’m right ehh?

  15. Raik on Tue, 28th Oct 2008 2:35 pm

Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. Anyone remember the Phantom Menace. If you feel the way I do about that movie you’ll my whoole view of this.

  16. Darth Corvis on Tue, 28th Oct 2008 10:44 pm

Episode one not only sucked, it showed good old georges true colors, he only cares about making money. That movie was made for little kids so he could have fans for another forty years. So what does he do with the fans he had? Turns his back on them and doesn’t make the game every fan wants. I’m starting to wish i like star trek instead.

  17. Kotor 3 Fanatic on Thu, 30th Oct 2008 12:10 pm

    Man
i really really really hope its true that there going to come out with a single player game also because one i cant afford to pay monthly and two the screen shots look like shit

  18. Revan 23456 on Sat, 1st Nov 2008 2:15 pm

Amen brother Nicholas. Of course this isn’t what the TRUE fans want. Heck, this isn’t even what the SWGALAXY’s crackheads want. Lucasarts intends to make a game that the most shriveled, lifeless, cat-assing, poop-socking WoW player POTENTIALLY wants. (Not that there’s anything wrong with WoW players – i mean, not really…;)
The point is, WoW players are an ENORMOUS potential market, and are all more than willing to pay monthly fees, micro transactions and the like. As soon as Lucasarts and Bioware saw both the popularity of KOTOR and the crack-like addiction power of MMO’s, they realized that it was possible to come up with a, should I say, metaphorical method of combining a finely aged gourmet cheese(KOTOR), with herbal cigarettes(MMOs), to create some not-so metaphorical gold. Its just too bad that, in doing so, they will inevitably create a monster; a blocky, cartoony, brick-lightsaber wielding, will-run-on-all-computer-systems monster. A monster, I fear, that cannot be killed by the torches and pitchforks of the true fans.
It was just unfathomable for me, and no doubt for others, to imagine this kind money-grubby behavior from two of the greatest game developers off all time; I mean, think of all the great games they’ve made back in the day! Lucasarts especially! Since when was quick, easy money their prime motive! And Bioware! The premier RPG maker of the West! When did they start whoring themselves like this!…. then, it came to me- (not THEN, but a few days ago), that, in all honesty, this probably isn’t the doing of either Lucasarts OR Bioware! “What!” you say? “How is this possible?” you say? Well, remember a few months ago–well, a lot months ago, I guess, On MSNBC there was an article in the “Games” section, about good-ol EA having its filthy eyes on that pretty-little Bioware. (This was the same year that EA took, or attempted to take, control over several game companies). EA got its wish to take over Bioware a few weeks later, just in time to slap DRM onto the PC version of Mass Effect. Oh yeah, you know where this is going- It is my hypothesis, that EA, -that evil empire, that filthy pimp-, is to blame for this whole TOR-MMO trainwreck. Bioware, which is controlled by EA, came to Lucasarts with an offer they couldn’t refuse: turn the KOTOR saga into an MMO, and MAKE AS MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE – SCREW THE FANS AND CONSUMERS. That is the creed of EA, after all. I pity the poor souls who are destined to buy TOR, and I shudder to think of what kind of “Limited installs and Activations” await them, – EA, after all, isn’t a company known for its user-friendly installations (see: BATTLEFIELD 2142).
But, what really makes this gamer mad is not the MMO status, not the ridiculous “Playschool toys” graphics, not the fact that Lucasarts seems GENUINELY SURPRISED at the fans negative reactions, and not even EA’s interference. No, what really gets under my skin are the brainwashed denizens of the Lucasarts official TOR boards. Here is a group of SWG playing Lucasarts brown-nosers, the like of which the Earth has never seen. I mean, seriously, have you SEEN the official site boards!? They loudly trumpet the “greatness” of the MMO decision, heartily applaud the “styalized graphics” and generally agree blindly with Lucasart’s every deluded plan for the game. And don’t expect to get far with them on the boards; anyone who post a mildly discontented comment is quickly and mercilessly ostracized by the brutally single-minded community. Worst of all, I have heard, but cannot verify, that a small handful of particularly strongly-opposed comments have been deleted outright! If this is true, than there is some scary stuff going on-very scary stuff. EA-style scary stuff. Its a pity that the tiny minority of supporters gets to project their voice as if they were a majority-delivering the false illusion to the TRUE KOTOR fan that the opinions among the gamers are evenly split on the issue. At least we still have great sites like this though, where the articles are unbiased and the opinions of the people are not stifled (thanks Mr. Admin! :)
    -sigh!- :*(
Still, we shouldn’t just give up hope; if the “true fan majority” that we are was to rally, than it is probably within the realm of possibility to get the companies, even EA, to notice us -and perhaps one day, in a future where cars can fly and people live on Mars- we the gamers will finally get our KOTOR 3!

-but, I digress… I guess I just stole a good 5 minutes of your life (and a good half an hour of mine :) , but I suppose if there were any reason for one to rant, this would be it. Show em’ what were made of KOTOR fans! Laterz.

  19. LoLRet on Sun, 2nd Nov 2008 3:27 pm

personally i think Kotor 3 should be a single player action/rpg like the first 2, i play WoW and i don’t think that an mmo based on the old republic would work, it’s a nice idea but it would be awkward and probably won’t feel right to play( takes time lots of to get mmo’s right) so i would make kotor 3 first and finish off/continue? the epic story then make an mmo after the single player action/rpg part of the saga is over and done with.

  20. Nicholas on Mon, 3rd Nov 2008 9:40 pm

I agree with both revan and LoLret. Hopefully all of this nonsense is well….nonsense. Maybe Kotor 3 is a stand alone-action rpg like its predicessors, maybe it’s the mongrel of all MMO’s, the alpha wolf perhaps. You know it’s going to drag in more consumers than anything known to man because it’s “labeled” KOTOR. Only time will tell, also I truelly hope EA doesen’t have there fingers in this, or it will be worse than anyone can imagine. Almost as bad as if SOE got aholt of it. All we can do wait it out now, everythings already set in motion.

  21. Daniel Pipeplayer on Tue, 4th Nov 2008 8:40 am

I would not buy KOTOR 3 if they make it a MMORPG, and that is not because I dislike those types of games; I just want a deep, engrossing single-player game like the first two. Why would they mess with the formula? Making that game a MMORPG would make as much sense as making another Star Wars movie as a romantic comedy (complete with songs by Lionel Richie…)!

  22. Nicholas on Wed, 5th Nov 2008 4:50 pm

Ahh yes I can see it now, assuming I buy this trash, which I do not intend to. I will be playing along, minding my own buisness finishing a pointless random quest, for example “Get together nerf hearder joes nerfs” (lol pun). And out of nowhere XxxXXXX123JedimasturxXxXxXrev@nXXxxXXx123134 will come running after me with 40 mobs of aggro on his butt yelling “PLZ HLP ME PLZ PLZ PLZ, IM GOIN TO DI, i dnt wnt to do the jedi questz againsz PLZ PLZ PLZ” Life sucks.

  23. cal on Sat, 8th Nov 2008 5:45 pm

plz no mmo, dont get me wrong mmo’s are good but the best things about the first 2 games are the storylines and all mmo’s ive played have hardly any main story, no cutscenes, montly payments and all you seem to do on them is do quest for npc’s or go round killin other players, spendin ages making money to buy some armour/weapon that as soon as you get u want a better one. if they make it mmo it will/might be popular for a while but like all mmo’s people get bored and forget (guild wars, SW galaxies) them becouse they have nothing to remeber them by, no amazing story, no super cool twists no nothing. i think that if Lucas arts or whoever did make this an mmo it would purely be for making money and it would probably kill the KOTOR series.

  24. Darthriddick on Sun, 9th Nov 2008 11:58 pm

    No.
Seriously people, i WILL boycott anyone who messes with my KOTOR3.
I am a VERY picky gamer. I like VERY few games. WOW sucks B@lls, as do most MMOs.
*Why? because of every single thing i can think of from graphics, to monthly costs and hidden charges, to.. well… to being just plain stupid, boring and dull.*
KOTOR has been the one game that i have always been able to rely upon. When the oblivion series let me down, where did i turn to? KOTOR.
When games started to become increasingly redundant and pathetic, *IE: all shooters, and NON-KOTOR RPGS*, where did i go? KOTOR.
I have play the first to games so many times i can practically recite every single line from heart. And thanks to the wonderful modding community, who continue to add new and exciting content, i will keep on playing these wonderful, albeit slightly old games for many years to come, long after such pathetic pieces of trash such as WOW have vanished into painful memory.

So i say once more. Since all of you seem as upset about this as i am, LET’S GET OUT THERE!
Let us remind the filthy corporations that it is US the FREE people of the world, that hold the keys to the kingdom! Without us, they would be nothing. Without our support, the mighty corporations will fall, and crumble, and their once mighty corporate empires will melt like wax before us.
They think that they can control us through fear, and intimidation, and bribes. BUT I SAY NO!
I will stand up for what i believe in. Even if it is just a video game. *albeit the best damn video game ever made.
And think. If we can win a small fight like this, imagine what we could do on a larger scale!
It is the people that control the profits, not the multi-million dollar corporations. If we stand up to them, and stay strong, there is NOTHING they will be able to do to stop us.

So i say once more. JOIN ME!
and we shall fight these B@st@rds with every last breath in our bodies. With every last ounce of strength.
And with our unbreakable conviction, we will put an end to the evil of Capitalistic corporate conglomerates, ONCE AND FOR ALL!

    *cue heroic music.

  25. AshAbeAdd on Mon, 10th Nov 2008 7:46 pm

Hmm this would be awful I guess.. but still Can we not check how this go? I mean really Isn’t KOTOR like MMO? It can go on and on and on..There are after all like 3500 years, right? But Im thinking it will not work.. Even if it does, What make you sure you cant do it alone? I mean from what I heard of Final Fantasy for xbox 360 you *can* do it alone, but you really *should* do it with other. It a possibility right? Just curious on how all of you take my view..

  26. Cookie on Mon, 17th Nov 2008 6:28 am

No offence, but not for our beloved… KotoR is a fantastic game that has made it as being an epic RPG. In response to “going it alone” Ash, the game isn’t really played alone as the storyline is so heavily based on the character interations of your party. (Though I realise that’s not entirely what you’re getting at…) Taking away that deep character involvement from the gameplay is like taking part of the game’s soul. KotoR as we know and love it just wouldn’t work as an MMO, at least the diehard fans know that… I pray that the developers come to their senses because I’d /HATE/ to see such epic potential ruined by consumerism. The last thing we want (I believe) is those crackedupMMO junkies invading what precous space we have left…

  27. Austin on Tue, 18th Nov 2008 8:08 pm

I want a real kotor3! Not a piece of crap MMO! They are really turning their backs on the fans to make money and it disgusts me! I myself am picky and i will boycott them for ruining such an awesome game that i have been looking forward to for awhile now!

I agree with evverything Revan 23456 has said.

    Single player > MMO

I’d rather spend days on end KOTOR in a basement on my own with no outside communications than play an MMORPG version of the game.

But it appears, only time will tell

Obviously it would be horrible to have an MMO for Kotor 3. So if any one is smart at all in making this game it will be RPG….

  32. NO MMO!! on Wed, 26th Nov 2008 5:12 pm

no! kotor 3 was supposed to be the epic conclusion to the story of Revan!! not some cartoon childrens buttcrack mmo!!!!

  33. Mandalore B on Fri, 28th Nov 2008 7:55 pm

Firstly i feel the same as everyone else about this MMO crap! When i first got Kotor i found it to be a true evolution of the RPG genre. I still play it on my Xbx360 along with KotorII (which was a let down but i put that to the creators for rushing it’s production!). I’ve waited so long to see what became of revan or if the exile ever made it to him/her. The list of question’s i want answering is HUGE! seriously ending the series with an MMO would be a major ‘Bindo’ in my opinion. If Mass Effect didn’t come out idk what i would have done for a decent RPG, i’m going to resort back to Crono Trigger or FF7…

In the wise words of Chewy ” Rrrrraaaaggggyyhhhhhhhh ” to your poor attempt at closure with the TORMMO lucas, shame on you.

  34. Ian on Sun, 7th Dec 2008 7:38 am

What everyone has has said basically, I wont even buy kotor 3 if its MMO, it will completely ruin the feel of it, and will probably ruin my enjoyment of kotor 1 and 2 if i went back to play them. it would completely taint the whole KOTOR series. ill be realy dissapointed if it turns out to be an MMO :\

  35. Nick on Sun, 7th Dec 2008 12:26 pm

MMO’s are kinda fun but KOTOR? why
they are only ruining a franchise that has been built up by a tremendously loyal following, just look how long we are willing to wait for these games, why destroy a fan base that you have built up with good games it just makes no sense. they have won so many awards for the games there is no reason to change. so again i ask WHY?!!!! why are you doing this to us Bioware.?!!!!!

  36. Damo990 on Fri, 12th Dec 2008 10:12 pm

Has anyone here actually been to either Lucas Arts or Bioware websites? Star Wars: The Old Republic is not a KoTOR title, it is based in the same universe roughly 300 years after KoTOR. I want another KoTOR game as much as the rest of you, and i want it to be singleplayer, with multiplayer maybe, but this isnt KoTOR 3 it’s an MMO based in the same universe. END OF STORY

  37. Antihero474 on Thu, 18th Dec 2008 9:49 pm

Okay i have heard rumors about kotor 3. and i stumbled upn this website. Now im reading all this stuff about it being a MMO. When will you know for sure if they are gunna make it a MMO or keep it RPG(as it should be). From those screen shots it looks like childish like that clone wars movie that just came out. Why would they make two amazing games and then ruin it by making it a MMO?

Isn’t that about a bitch? I play the hell out of two great games over 3 years ago…. I wait all this time for them to come out with the next installment (which would be on a next-gen console and totally blow me away… or so I thought). And this is how my patience is rewarded? They spit in the faces of their fans and long time followers? They take the game we ALL want and love, show it to us, make us hungry for it, then scratch the back of the disc with a pair of scissors and try to release some MMO in its place. No way! I’m not buying some MMO garbage and I can guarantee all the people I know who have waited will not buy this piece of garbage either. All you had to do was release 1 simple little game… how can you guys screw that up?

  46. Boris on Fri, 26th Dec 2008 6:24 am

Force Unleashed was such a let down to KoToR fans like me and overall the news of a new KoToR is the best thing at this stage. It’s been too long since a new one was made! I’ve beaten KoToR 1 & 2 countless times and I really really hope the story will be as good as the first two in this new release. Also, the MMO idea is just a bunch of crap, it will never work, a single player RPG is the way to go with KoToR.

So…..let me get this straight…..the sad truth is…

    1-MMO=Mega Money Opportunity
    2-Palpatine now runs EA
3-George has turned over Lucas arts to JarJar Binks

oh well……now that Lucas arts IS the Evil Galactic Empire,we should at least be thankful for what we got in the past before everything went to hell and a handbasket.

    sad…….
