Limited Edition Podcast 6: Bioware The Old Republic Interview

As the comments keep rolling in, I hear more and more about how much people hate the fact that this is going to be a MMO. At least 90% of our comments here at kotor3.net are negative comments towards The Old Republic, again, I am outstanded.

I’m curious at the age bracket of these negative comments, whether it’s the 20+ generation that hates the fact that this is a MMO and the younger generation that loves it. Feel free to post your age in your comments, i’m very curious.

I’m 26 and I hate the fact that it will be a MMO. I loved KOTOR & KOTOR 2 and I think that, that is the way that it should have went.

Anyway, check out this exclusive podcast on the upcoming The Old Republic:

I hate the fact that KOTOR 3 is going to be MMO. i am 17 and enjoyed playing KOTOR 1&2. i am a huge fan of the “answer-to-questions-and-become-light-or-dark-side”-thing and just the whole storyline! :D it’s so amazing!
Dont screw this unique thing up by making this MMO!!!!!!

  2. Cody Stannard on Tue, 25th Nov 2008 2:49 pm

I don’t want an MMO, I don’t have high speed. If I could I would but as it stands I don’t and I really want the real KOTOR 3 to be made.

  3. John on Tue, 25th Nov 2008 3:46 pm

I’m half and half on KOTOR 3 being a MMO I would love the interaction with all the other lovers of KOTOR but I can’t stand the monthly fees I pay enough for the game and then Xbox Live to be paying another monthy fee to play a game if they waive the fee I’ll be all over it if they charge like 10 a month then I won’t be playing but for the first month age 28

  4. Janus on Tue, 25th Nov 2008 5:06 pm

KotOR 1 and 2 were quite frankly works of utter brilliance. I’m 33, play very few computer games at all, and I never play a game more than once. KotOR 1 & 2 were exceptions to this seemingly infallable rule.

I’ve played them both obssessively many times over I enjoyed them so much.

I won’t pretend to try and speak for others in my response here, they have done so for themselves. All I can say is that a KotOR 3 role playing game would be of great interest to me. I like many fans it seems, want to know the conclusion (or next installment) of the Revan/Exile storys. A Starwars MMO however would be of no interest what so ever. I’ve tried MMO’s and get bored very quickly so have decided not to waste my time.

This being said I don’t see why Star wars: The Old Republic should not have a single player option that gives the fan’s what they want: KotOR 3. It’s not like you don’t have to do the work anyway in creating the worlds and a single player option might be a chance to display a portion of what the MMO would contain and maybe pursuade the fans to try the MMO.

Nothing would be lost in including a single player option and a great deal could be gained.

I hope this is listened to but I fear that after 3 years of waiting all my hopes for a new KotOR product will be in vain.

  5. John on Tue, 25th Nov 2008 7:22 pm

All I can say is that I’m devastated by the news about the developers going the MMO route. I absolutely loved the first two games and I was hopelessly addicted to them both. Some of the best fun in gaming memory for me and I was chomping at the bit for the next installment but then I heard someone mention that it was going to be an MMO and I just didn’t want to believe it. Now that it’s official, I am stunned. What were they thinking? Hasn’t Lucas Arts already done the MMO thing with Galaxies? Seriously, do we need to go through that again? I’m 36 and I personally feel this is one of the biggest tragedies in all gamedom. A single player mode would be fantastic but I’m not holding my breath. What a colossal disappointment. I guess I’ll just replay the first two games again to get my fix. (sigh)

  6. John on Tue, 25th Nov 2008 8:16 pm

I hate the idea thats it’s going to be an MMO. I’m 19 and this infuriates me, Kotor 1 was AMAZING, 2 was lacking a bit, and 3 just sounds horrible to me as an MMO. Keep it an original RPG, and then make an MMO after its all said and done.

  7. Matt on Tue, 25th Nov 2008 11:09 pm

I’m 22, and I can’t believe George Lucas did not finish the KotOR trilogy. MMO’s suck. There is no story, no changing environments, only completing pointless quests like in WoW.

Lets just face it, the gaming industry has been consumed by corporate giants. Games like Star Control, Maniac Mansion, Starcraft, Diablo, KotOR, Halo: Combat Evolved are NOT coming back; no matter how many sequels they release for them.

  8. shashank on Wed, 26th Nov 2008 4:42 am

I’m 21 years old… and a big fan of the kotor series. obviously there’s no point in continuing as we can’t expect anythin much from a company that never listens to its fans. Mr Janus, I presume if lucasarts were to do such a thing then dont you think nobody’s gonna play the mmo, cause by then they would already know the game in and out and there would not be any point spending cash and playing online. But if it does happen …. hay beer’s on me…

  9. Kirby on Wed, 26th Nov 2008 1:12 pm

Mr Janus that is a good idea hopfully the mmo fail’s, They see your post and just make a normal Kotor 3.

  10. Justin on Wed, 26th Nov 2008 6:16 pm

From what I’ve been reading, this is an actual stand-alone package.
There isn’t ANY confirmation that this is KOTOR 3, but if it is, I’ll try it.
Just don’t expect me to pay 15 dollars a month on top of a sixty dollar game on top of my phone and internet bill.
Bioware is by far my FAVORITE developer, but I have to say, they let me down quite a bit.

  11. Rich on Wed, 26th Nov 2008 6:35 pm

    HATE MMO’S

  12. jojo on Wed, 26th Nov 2008 9:28 pm

I am 15 and I love kotOR. I seriously think this mmo is a terrible idea. There is no way I’m going to pay for some stupid mmo. They should have made it a single player, because I like playing alone thank you very much.
This mmo is not finishing the trilogy.

  13. Set on Thu, 27th Nov 2008 1:15 am

I’m 26 and the fact that its going to become an MMO dont look good at all, but i do think that they need to come out with a better SW online game then just SWG.

  14. Droity on Thu, 27th Nov 2008 1:37 am

Loved the idea that BIOWARE was going to take over doing KOTOR3. The second one as many others have said, is quite lacking. MMO’s … not really into them. The thing that made KOTOR original was its approach to the notion that its almost a movie where the player determines the outcome.

To be quite honest MMO’s you’re basically having to deal with all sorts of people whom MAY be annoying as many of us will have experienced with online games.

I’m 25yrs old and I loved the first KOTOR, would like to see KOTOR3 be made by BIOWARE as they seem to have the ability to make you feel part of the game, but NOT this MMO notion because then the whole “personalized” aspect of the game each individual player would have would be completely lost.

  15. Andrew on Thu, 27th Nov 2008 3:13 am

I’m 14 and I hate the idea of it being an MMO. Simply because i love KOTOR and if it’s an mmo i wont be able to play it, it costs too much and with the lag and “constant updates” it wont be worth it.

  16. Tristan Dodd on Thu, 27th Nov 2008 4:39 pm

Hi yeah i think the new mmo kotor is gonna crash and burn. I loved 1&2 but 3 is gonna suck. I’m 12 and i will most likely to still play cause i’m a huge fan of the series

  17. kaddy on Thu, 27th Nov 2008 6:37 pm

i loved kotor 1 and 2….played it nonstop. i’m sure kotor 3 will be good but i don’t like the fact the it’s an MMO. i’m 15 and although i like usually like MMOs, i don’t think it’s right for kotor.

  18. Shawn on Fri, 28th Nov 2008 12:39 am

I was really excited to hear there was going to be a KoToR 3. until i heard it was going to be an MMO. Congrats guys you ruined one of the best series out there. 1 and 2 where great played them several times each and i have no desire to get 3 thanks for the let down

  19. Damien on Fri, 28th Nov 2008 9:16 am

I’m 30, I loved KOTOR 1 and 2 and was looking forward to KOTOR 3. I played SWG for a long time, and only recently took a break from WOW. I think a MMO might work, but it also may be a huge failure. A better move might be more of a Neverwinter Knights thing, where you can play a one person game, maybe with different classes of starwars characters, and if you want you can play online with a DND type dungeon masters and player made levels. That way you have a good one player game, and a lot of new online content for others.

  20. Dan on Fri, 28th Nov 2008 1:56 pm

18 years old here, KOTOR 1 and 2 were absolutely amazing games to play as far as I was concerned about RPGs. One aspect I would enjoy from the MMO aspect of KOTOR 3 would be an open ending, or continuation. Always would’ve enjoyed an open ended KOTOR, due to the fact that I’ve played many MMO’s and love that part of it – it doesn’t end, really. However, I don’t believe in adding another $10-15 a month to play a game, which is why I play Guild Wars for example. I hope it would be a one-time purchase game, because I can deal with paying $50-70 worth of a game which could last years for all I know, but if required to pay monthly, I may not even bother with it.

  21. Jordan/jitter333 on Fri, 28th Nov 2008 7:31 pm

I’m 18 and have been Looking foward to this game for AGES!!!.. also Hate the fact thats its an mmo! =/

  22. Mandalore B on Fri, 28th Nov 2008 8:19 pm

I wanted to game to be like the other two, the change of game style for the last in the series is abit late? lol Did they think no one would mind? I could deal with paying a little for some downloadable content but i’d rather be a nerf herder then play that aweful looking MMO.

  23. Noelle on Sat, 29th Nov 2008 10:30 am

The Old Republic is going to suck balls.
no one wants to pay, no one wants to have to deal with it.
i hope they crash and burn.
seriously, is following up a story line really that hard?
im 17, and i hate the idea of kotor 3 being an mmo.

  24. Mandalore B on Sun, 30th Nov 2008 12:49 pm

I’ve watched possible every bullshit interview about this MMO, there trying to talk us into buying that joke of a SW game. They talk about story line’s based on ‘your’ characters class? Yes i am a fan of creating my own character but i don’t want the story to be based on MY character! My action’s having an effect on the game is more then enough for me, i just wanted to know what happend to Revan, Exile, Carth, Bastila, Canderous and of course HK47!
Now i’m afraid that won’t happen…1. They havnt mentioned anything about the return of old characters (but being set so far in the future how could they?) and 2. Even tho i could pay for the MMO as a rule i don’t belive in constantly paying for a game after i cashed out for it in the first place.

  25. Someon3 on Wed, 3rd Dec 2008 1:26 pm

I’m under 18, me personally, I hate the idea of having to pay in order to play – It rly sux! I was expecting a new Single Player, as many ppl said above, u don’t have to pay or play to keep up with anybody else, just when u want, AND maybe they could continue the thing with Revan, I rly wished they kept that storyline.
Looks like they didn’t have it with SWG – which sux – and I think it’s just gonna be another MMO FULL of pointless quests, everybody trying to get more powerful. Everybody abusing bugs and other things, ppl of all kinds, some who hate it but still play, some who like it.
So…I wish there will be a Single player version

  26. DacenVellia on Thu, 4th Dec 2008 6:21 am

I’m 26 years old and I’m also very disappointed that this is going to be a MMO.

When I heard Kotor 3 was being made, I cried tears of joy. That being said, I also cried when I heard it was an MMO, this time i wasn’t happy.
I don’t know how Bioware hopes to reach the bar that was set SO high by Kotor 1 & 2. I mean, even if they say it’s bigger than Blizzard’s WoW, it’s a entirely different style of gaming that isn’t what we Kotor fans were expecting. Kotor 1 & 2 became so popular because of it’s style, it had a unique feel. Heck, I still play it to this day and necer get tired…The idea of thousands of users competing in a game that was meant to be single player just dosen’t appeal to me.

  28. Daan on Fri, 5th Dec 2008 7:57 am

    I’m 17
I don’t care if SW:TOR is an mmo or just an singleplayer. But i gotta say Kotor 1&2 where so good and special, because there wasn’t such a good rpg as kotor concerning the dialogs & story. Now is there ofcourse maby mass effect but still. Why change something thats perfect? If you make kotor 3 an mmo, than it wil be overshadowd by WOW and WAR or other futur great mmo’s.
Also if you make kotor3 an mmo, then the story WIL NOT be the most importent factor of the game. For example, in an mmo the world can’t change with your dissicions, because others gotta do the story too. And i’m almost sure that you can’t have as many good dialogs in an mmo as in an singleplayer. So you’re actually removing al the factors what made kotor so special and awsome. I personally wil buy the game if it’s mmo or singleplayer, but i think IF you’re gonna make it an mmo then you’re gonna lose a lot of fans.
Good luck making the game. I hope i can play it before 2010:P.

  29. jay on Fri, 5th Dec 2008 4:42 pm

im 15 an i don’t mind mmos (played WoW fo a while) but im furious that Bioware could do this to two of my favorite games of all time ive spent years waiting for to find out what happens to revan and the exile i mean like why would they get kreia to hint at what revan was doing and leave such a huge cliff-hanger and then not even follow up on the story thats what annoys me i wouldnt have minded if theyed have made a real sequel and then the mmo that would have been fine ( apart from the monthly subscription) and this mmo is going to be a few hundred after the series, what the hell that means there wont be a sequel for the real kotor. i probably will try the game but i am very disapointed about the decision to make it an mmo.

  30. joe on Fri, 19th Dec 2008 2:24 pm

I’m 15. I hate the fact that this game is going to be an mmo.The developers say that they want to give something the fans wanted,THIS IS NOT WHAT THE TRUE FANS WANT AT ALL. Just another way of making money. All us fans want is a new kotor 3 for Xbox 360,but now you ruined it,congrats for ruining one of the best game franchises of all time. Why a mmo such a bad idea,I’ll tell you why.The great thing about kotor 1 & 2 was the story.the progression of your own pesonal character, now with an mmo your going to see people with the same clothes, faces and skills everywhere you look, plus mmo’s cost money, and with this economy you are killing all of us making us pay monthly or weekly charges. :( I want to cry.

  31. Lilia on Sat, 20th Dec 2008 11:10 pm

I loved kotOR 1&2 played them several times over until there was nothing left to accomplish.
I was SO excited when I found out there was going to be a kotOR3 I wanted to cry.
But then I found out it was going to be an mmo and everything fell apart.
    WTF WERE THEY THINKING?
    seriously,
Im 17 and very very dissapointed :(

  32. joe on Sun, 21st Dec 2008 2:21 pm

I’m15. Basically, let’s put it this way, whoever thought of making a kotor mmo is a gaint doughnut head.I mean come on.Scratch the whole mmo idea and make it a singleplayer for xbox 360. it’s what we all want.mmo’s are overated, just a simple kotor for 360 PLEASE Reconsider making this a mmo.PRETTY PLEASE

  33. ben on Mon, 22nd Dec 2008 4:20 am

im 17. i was happy to hear bioware had kotor rights back. they done better than obsidian. how ever i wish now they GAVE IT BACK TO OBSIDIAN. maybe they are not so stupid as to make a mmo out of the greatest game of all time.

KOTOR is a game that has a certain targeted audience. roughly 15-30.

why. would you make a MMO which attracts stupid little 12-14 year olds?

  34. joe on Mon, 22nd Dec 2008 8:53 am

I have good news my fellow haters of mmo.If you dislike the fact that this game is a mmo, like me.Go to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 Petition. This is the tag of the website.www.petitiononline.com/KOTOR3/petition.html.We need all the help we can get,soo go there and PETITION.

  35. jebby jedi on Mon, 22nd Dec 2008 9:51 am

THERE’S A PETITION? Don’t worry joe I am singing it. I Hate this mmo idea. i wish they would just change it for the fans. I’m 22 and and loved kotor 1 and 2 (still play them) and was so looking foward to this new game. but they ruined it with this mmo. so I am going to do all i can to change it. So yes i will sign this petition. Those of you who hate the mmo should sign too.

  36. Ryan on Fri, 26th Dec 2008 10:39 pm

I am Incredibly dissapointed in the fact of the MMO!
I Am an xbox gamer and i have been looking forward to KOTOR2 forever! But now they come and screw it all up for everyone. Like many have said, if 90 percent of all people hate the MMO why not change it?
Argh…! I needed to rant. But really NO MMO!

  37. Bertie Wiseman on Sat, 27th Dec 2008 8:45 am

I am not against the idea of MMO, but I also see the a draw backs of Kotor3 being totaly online, I have played games such as WOW and guild wars and phantasy star online, they are all quest based very reptative its an old style of gaming and it doesnt fit the style of Kotor.

I think it would be best to have the style of the first kotor as single player mode. once you have finished the game I dont see the harm of having online function, you could think of it as an extra add on the kotor univers where you can team up with light and darkside players to do quest which are MMO but also retaining the same style as kotor RPG infact I dont see why the two cannot exist within the same field.

there could still be people to influence and have Bot character that you can talk to which can also tage along

the trouble with a game like this is that it would take alot of time and be incredibly complicated to pull off, having both RPG and MMO.

if I had to Choose I would choose RPG over MMO.

teaming up with my friends on kotor and being light and dark could open up a new expansion the Kotor universe, I think it be a great add-on could open up new possibilties.

If it were going to MMO, it have to a few things to it, well if you are going to be bad you should be able to challange lightside to a dual and also have the ability to steal and maniplate players into doing mission. that would set them up for death or that goes against iver light or dark.

this would be my ideal MMO of kotor and it would be the only way the Kotor MMO would work to a mass audience.

  38. Niki on Sun, 8th Feb 2009 9:52 pm

I HATE that this is an MMO, I adored the first 2 games, probably my all time favourites and I dont think I was ever as crushed as when I heard the news.
I do not agree to having to pay for a game, then pay monthly to play the game.
Playing online with others is in no way the same experience as having a personal journey through a game.
I could go on (and on and on) but lets just say that I will still wait and hope for a real sequel to KOTOR and until then even if I was given a copy of The Old Republic for free I would still only use it as a coaster.
Oh and I’m a 22 year old girl, and my 17 year old brother and 27 year old brother feel the exact same way.
