Could The Old Republic MMO Save EA? + New Screenshots

I thought this was interesting. It will be either one of those games that will ‘make or break’ a company, in my opinion.

Is Obi-Wan the only hope for Electronic Arts? Cowen Group analyst Doug Creutz thinks so, suggesting that the publisher may have missed the boat on a meaningful core market strategy for the current console cycle.

Creutz says the upcoming BioWare MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic is EA’s “best chance” at improving its profitability — but even that, he says, might be hampered by World of Warcraft’s market dominance.

Concerned about the company’s future profitability, Creutz says he is “slashing” estimates for EA’s 2009 because of the company’s “inability to develop hit core-gamer console titles.”

“The company continues to struggle to deliver quality improvements where they are most urgently needed,” Creutz adds. EA’s recent cost-cutting measures, the analyst stresses, need deeper and more efficient research and development to benefit the company, and so the analyst’s outlook for EA is muted “for the next several years.”

On EA’s lack of core-focused successes, Creutz says: “We believe much of the blame for this goes to prior management, which failed to incubate new hit franchises heading into this cycle and let aging franchises decline,” he says. “Instead, dollars were spent on what were largely low-return projects.”

But it’s not all the fault of EA’s prior leadership, the analyst maintains. The current management may be “guilty of some resource misallocation” — and Creutz notes the Wii in particular.

“[EA]’s attempt to chase market share [on the Wii] has run up against the reality that third-party economics on that platform are simply not that attractive due to Nintendo’s dominance of the software market,” he says.

“As a result, EA has had few owned IP titles that have reached or sustained hit economics over the last several years.”

At this point in the console cycle, Creutz argues that the hit franchises have largely been established, and will be increasingly difficult for EA to displace.

“Aside from EA Sports and The Sims, EA really has a stable full of modestly-performing titles, with none offering the type of mega-hit R&D leverage offered by competing titles such as Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto, or Assassin’s Creed”, he says.

So, we finally have our first video documentry. It is interesting to say the least, they mainly discuss how it will so much better than KOTOR 1 & 2 and how much bigger it will be. You will see some pre pruduction footage that they claim that they havn’t showed anyone else, besides us, the fans.

Overall the footage looked pretty good to me. I’ll be interested to hear everyone’s thoughts.

We will also be announcing the winner of the “Why aren’t they listening contest” shortly!

BioWare® and LucasArts™ share the vision for Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ in our first video documentary, complete with new concepts, new screenshots, and real-time pre-production gameplay video. Hear about the approach to storytelling straight from The Old Republic’s Creative Director and Lead Designer James Ohlen and Principal Lead Writer Daniel Erickson, and watch Art Director Jeff Dobson discuss the aesthetic appeal of stylized realism.

Story in STAR WARS: The Old Republic

Some great info on the storyline for The Old Republic has been released via the official Old Republic website. Even though it is a MMO, it still sounds awesome and I may be just compelled to try it. I’ve bene having a great response to our last post, where we announced our first contest! Be sure to check it out here! for your chance to win a free Star Wars Video Game of your choice!

The article talks about your character development through-out the game:

“In Star Wars: The Old Republic you will have an emotional attachment to your character and face decisions in the game which will guide the development of your character and determine the direction of the character’s storyline. Whatever your choices may be, you’ll still be the hero (or villain) of an epic storyline which gives extra meaning to the other gameplay pillars. Character advancement will be much more than coming up with efficient statistics. Exploration will be about experiencing new places, new people, and new stories. Finally, instead of just reaching for that next level, you will be engaging in visceral combat reminiscent of the Star Wars movies where you’re motivated to fight for more than just yourself – but also for a cause.

We believe that choice is the most gripping and crucial element of these stories. The team has left a lot open so that your decisions have a significant impact on the way the storylines and the characters develop. Because each storyline offers multiple paths, Star Wars: The Old Republic writers create much more content than you would expect from a linear game storyline. In fact, Star Wars: The Old Republic will contain more story content than all other BioWare games combined. As with the original Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™, some stories intertwine, and some decisions may lead your character down a completely unexpected path. Smaller choices may yield small results, but on some occasions may later lead to larger consequences.”

As well as your class and some information about their new companion system:

“In Star Wars: The Old Republic, your class means more than just the amount of hit points your character has or how many skills you can choose. Each class has its own epic storyline that will drive the majority of your character’s journey. These storylines reflect the spirit of the class you chose, some more traditionally heroic, some more sinister. Class-specific content allows you to play through a tailored experience based on your choices.

Along your journey, you’ll come across a feature that made the original Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™ series so immersive – companion characters. Companion characters are your non-player character (NPC) allies, each with their own personality, thoughts, and struggles. Companions will fight by your side and get caught up in your storyline. You might even get caught up in theirs as well. Because each of your companions has a mind of his or her own, they will react to the choices you make and may support or even turn against you.

With compelling choices, class-specific epic storylines, and fully developed companions characters, we are making a strong commitment to put the concept of story at the forefront of Star Wars: The Old Republic. By focusing on these story-driven features, our goal is that you will become immersed in your character and others around you, explore exciting environments, and in the end, get lost in your own Star Wars saga. Stay tuned to the official website for more updates and behind the scenes looks at Star Wars: The Old Republic.”

Star Wars: The Old Republic – Why aren’t they listening to us? Contest!

I am seeing lots more disgruntled comments.. and a few good comments coming. One was a really long one but I wanted to address this:

Well, I suppose this all leads to the question of why aren’t they listening to us.

Why? Because it’s impossible to please everyone. It would be nice if they came out with the MMO and then release a single player version of it to please both sides, but that’s probably not going to happen. I’m not sure whether it would take too much time or too much money?

So, I thought i’d run a little contest. I’d like to hear people’s thoughts on why they aren’t listening to us. It seems like there are two sides to this dilemma, the side that wants and loves the idea of a MMO and the side just wants a normal KOTOR single player game. It’s kind of like how everyone wanted Multiplayer for The Force Unleashed… that didn’t happen.

Just reply to this thread with your reason why they’re not listening to us, the best answer and comment will win themselves a free Star Wars PC game of their choice!

Make sure you leave your email address! The winner will be contacted on December 15th and their free game will be shipped out the following day.

I was thinking of adding a forum as well for people to discuss our dilemma. Let me know if you’d be interested.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is gunning for WOW News…

I noticed we got mentioned on the official The Old Republic community and I just wanted to point out a couple things. Obviously there is a lot of tension between the people who want The Old Republic MMO and those who don’t want it.

Now this was the original post:

“Oh, but there are! You wouldn’t find many of those here although. And I really doubt, that the majority wants a MMO. There could be more, but it surely isn’t the majority!

Just look here for example what those guys have to say:

http://kotor3.net/

…and frankly said, I think so, too.”

To be honest, I would say that there really is no majority, there’s a lot of people who want it and there’s a lot who don’t… and then there are the people who just don’t care and will take anything as long as it has Star Wars on it.

Now the next post wrote:

If they had complaints why wouldnt they post it here on say the offical site rather thena fan site set up for a game thats not comfirmed?

I’ll tell you why, because when people go to an official forum, they either like the game or they’re harassed and ridiculed for not liking it. “If you don’t want the game why are you here?”, “Get lost troll”, ect..

It’s not just this game, it’s for everything. Try rolling over to another official forum and express dislike for what they’re doing.

I just thought it was interesting, how much people, at least who visit this site, arn’t looking forward to the MMO. I’m not that excited for it, but, chances are i’ll play it, and you never know, I just may love it.

Just remember that anything posted here is our own personal opinions, post away your comments, good and bad, I love to hear them!

Anyway, a little bit of new that was posted awhile ago.

EA and LucasArts executives have told videogaming247 that they are targeting World of Warcraft-sized success with Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The BioWare-developed MMO was announced this week and you can find everything there is to know about it (not much, unfortunately) here on Eurogamer. LucasArts is publishing the game, but EA, as owner of BioWare, is also involved.

“We have very high expectations for this,” EA Games president Frank Gibeau told vg247. “Just look at the base of Star Wars fans, plus what BioWare can do. Trust me: we want to win. EA’s reputation is for wanting to win.

“This is going to be a powerful category and there’s lots of ways to compete in this category,” Gibeau continued. “[Blizzard] created a much larger opportunity for everybody else, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to stay that way.”

LucasArts’ online chief Tom Nichols chimed in, betting that The Old Republic’s emphasis on story would bring record numbers of players to massively multiplayer gaming.

“Our goal is to show that by bringing storytelling to the genre that we can attract an even wider audience. Plus, we have the benefit of this huge brand, which has done very, very well for nearly 30 years.”

Asked specifically if the game would be bigger than WOW, Nichols said: “I think this game has that potential.”

The executives are the first in the MMO industry to be bold enough to predict that they can take on and best Blizzard’s record number of subscriptions.

Star Wars: The Old Republic has no release date as yet, and has only been confirmed for PC, although Gibeau suggested that a console version was “under consideration”.
