Star Wars: The Old Republic is gunning for WOW News…

I noticed we got mentioned on the official The Old Republic community and I just wanted to point out a couple things. Obviously there is a lot of tension between the people who want The Old Republic MMO and those who don’t want it.

Now this was the original post:

“Oh, but there are! You wouldn’t find many of those here although. And I really doubt, that the majority wants a MMO. There could be more, but it surely isn’t the majority!

Just look here for example what those guys have to say:

http://kotor3.net/

…and frankly said, I think so, too.”

To be honest, I would say that there really is no majority, there’s a lot of people who want it and there’s a lot who don’t… and then there are the people who just don’t care and will take anything as long as it has Star Wars on it.

Now the next post wrote:

If they had complaints why wouldnt they post it here on say the offical site rather thena fan site set up for a game thats not comfirmed?

I’ll tell you why, because when people go to an official forum, they either like the game or they’re harassed and ridiculed for not liking it. “If you don’t want the game why are you here?”, “Get lost troll”, ect..

It’s not just this game, it’s for everything. Try rolling over to another official forum and express dislike for what they’re doing.

I just thought it was interesting, how much people, at least who visit this site, arn’t looking forward to the MMO. I’m not that excited for it, but, chances are i’ll play it, and you never know, I just may love it.

Just remember that anything posted here is our own personal opinions, post away your comments, good and bad, I love to hear them!

Anyway, a little bit of new that was posted awhile ago.

EA and LucasArts executives have told videogaming247 that they are targeting World of Warcraft-sized success with Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The BioWare-developed MMO was announced this week and you can find everything there is to know about it (not much, unfortunately) here on Eurogamer. LucasArts is publishing the game, but EA, as owner of BioWare, is also involved.

“We have very high expectations for this,” EA Games president Frank Gibeau told vg247. “Just look at the base of Star Wars fans, plus what BioWare can do. Trust me: we want to win. EA’s reputation is for wanting to win.

“This is going to be a powerful category and there’s lots of ways to compete in this category,” Gibeau continued. “[Blizzard] created a much larger opportunity for everybody else, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to stay that way.”

LucasArts’ online chief Tom Nichols chimed in, betting that The Old Republic’s emphasis on story would bring record numbers of players to massively multiplayer gaming.

“Our goal is to show that by bringing storytelling to the genre that we can attract an even wider audience. Plus, we have the benefit of this huge brand, which has done very, very well for nearly 30 years.”

Asked specifically if the game would be bigger than WOW, Nichols said: “I think this game has that potential.”

The executives are the first in the MMO industry to be bold enough to predict that they can take on and best Blizzard’s record number of subscriptions.

Star Wars: The Old Republic has no release date as yet, and has only been confirmed for PC, although Gibeau suggested that a console version was “under consideration”.

I agree with you. This is my biggest source of Kotor 3 info! “Or whatever you call it”. Keep up the good work.

lol..on their official site, on one of the announcements for the game it says:the age of the old republic:thousands of years before the rise of darth vader..shows how much this game is meant for old kotor fans

Bullshit! I don’t rly think it will have the same impact as WoW, maybe the first months but then it’s gonna phail IMO!
I would like to see NOBODY playing SW:TOR and then the guys from BIOWARE would be like “WTF? It’s the release and we only have 20.000 players?”
Rly I think they should reconsider this :/

    - Thank you! You should have seen how the Admins at Diablofans.com treated me (and others) who opposed the finger-painting like art style of Diablo III. The Admins actually went so far as to actively delete all posts in opposition to Blizzards art style. Talk about fanboys!

    - Yes, we know you do… If you had torn your zipper off with your dentures and whipped out your green, wrinkled, decomposing penis, it would not be as obvious as your “reputation for wanting to win”.

“…they are targeting World of Warcraft-sized success with Star Wars: The Old Republic.”

That makes me wonder, if Blizzard also disappointed so many fans by converting World of Warcraft into a MMO. You can probably see by that, if Bioware is up for the challenge, or if Star Wars: The Old Republic is doomed to be a mediocre MMO at best.

You know, it really doesn’t matter if Bioware is up to the challenge and it’s the greatest MMO ever made. Reading about the companion system they’re setting up, it looks like it will be quite innovative. What they don’t get is that a lot of people, particularly the story-loving RPGers who loved KOTOR and made it so popular, just don’t want to play MMOs at all. It’s like they added mayonnaise to my favorite microbrew. As I sputter “WHAT?!” they respond, “But it’s really good mayonnaise, a nice garlic lemon aioli.” I blink unbelieving as I back away and put down the six pack. I then look for another brand without flipping mayo in my ale.

this game seriously needs to work on its graphics and need 100% good story line as good as the other kotors but thats doubtful

bros i think KOTOR 3 will be a badass MMO. hopefully lucasarts wont massacre it like they did SWG

  10. kramer on Thu, 4th Dec 2008 7:32 pm

i dont think they will get to a WoW sized population but they might get alot of people.

  11. I Hate This Country on Thu, 4th Dec 2008 9:30 pm

I hate to say this… but realistically speaking, Star Wars: The Old Republic will do very well. I doubt we will see a KotOR 3 for at least 3 years, if ever.

Damn you George Lucas for selling out, damn you!

    Yup, with Grand Evil Empire of EA at the helm, I have no doubt there’s a whole orgy such wonderful new technologies and concepts that await us! Technologies such as the supremely effective-and totally un-frustrating “Digital Rights Management”! And there will certainly be no need to worry about a late release… after all, EA is committed to giving us our games on-time, every-time;
even if it means pushing it out the door and onto the street without its metaphorical pants on! Now THATS commitment to the fans isn’t it? But of course you’re probably still concerned about a buggy launch and insufficient patches right? No worries! EA surely plans to put into action the time tested “Hope Nobody Notices the Problems” launch technique! And about those patches and updates? Well, its not official, but I’ve heard EA plans to employ the revolutionary brand-new method of “Pretending We Can’t Hear Your Primal Cries for Help”! Yes, this will no doubt be a new high mark for the noble art of creating Video games! Really, how could it not be with EA? Remember SPORE? Remember how everyone was so very happy with its release? Remember how everybody loved it on Amazon.com, and how they raved about it in their reviews?

    Remember?

    Remember?

Well, you can’t say I never told you so. If anyone still doesn’t believe that Lucasart’s and Bioware’s actions were not due to EA’s “Magical Money Machines” pressed against the back of their heads, then I’m sorry, I just can’t help you. And yes, I was being sarcastic up there, but man, couldn’t you just “totally” see EA saying that!! And geez, I know they get more and more shameless every year, but I found their comments made in the above interview to videogame 247 to be genuinely SHOCKING. Heck, they’re starting to sound more like the dictatorial Peoples Republic of China than that all-consuming, semi-sentient black hole of a company that we all know and hate.
Ughh…. will it ever stop getting worse? I took one glance at the new screenshots, and I swear for a minute I thought they were promotional photos for Hasbro’s new line of “Galactic Heroes” children’s toys. Well, OK, not really, but you have to admit thats what they look like right now- more than an actual KOTOR game, anyway. But seriously, have you SEEN the screenshots? Have you? I mean my WORD… the original KOTOR’s graphics looked better than this- a game whose engine is 8 FRICKING YEARS OLD!! I guess I’m over reacting though; these are pre-beta renders, after all, and I’ve probably been playing too much Crysis lately… Still, one hopes they decide to take the path of the light side and make TOR look more the the originals and better. One can dream, I suppose. Who knows, maybe if they decide to give this new game the same vibrant, haunting, genuine-starwars-feel art quality of the originals, instead of the whole playschool-toys scheme, I might be willing to shell out 50 bucks plus the monthly fee to try it out. You never know.

I can’t help but bring Mr. 3 Important Things excellent comparison of the Diablo 3 “Fan” boards to the Official TOR boards; two maniacal groups of woefully deceived foot-kissing extremists, no doubt. In fact, there’s more similarities concerning the Diablo 3 conundrum and the TOR catastrophe than just angry forums; Diablo 3’s new, bouncy, cartoon-ey art style triggered a catastrophic eruption of angry fan mail and forum anger very similar to the TOR fury…so much so, that the legions of disgruntled fans vacated to protest websites designed to prove to Blizzard that their art choice was a mistake. And believe me when I say, you do NOT want to make a Diablo fanboy mad. Seriously. Ever. Think of a Halo fan and multiply that sheer level of selfless devotion by 10, and you have a Diablo fan. The huge numbers of votes in online petitions have proven such fanboys mettle; a group whose efforts are to be admired, to be sure. And if you go and say “but Blizzard did the same thing with WOW, and look how that turned out!” than you probably haven’t played Diablo. Its actually all about fighting and violently killing the dark demons of hell in a gruesome blood-explosion extraordinare. Hell of a game. Now do you really think that it would work with Saturday morning cartoon graphics?

Well, I suppose this all leads to the question of why aren’t they listening to us. It sucks and they need to take out their earplugs. I guess I should give a more eloquent and witty way of saying it, but its 2:00 in the morning where I live, and I am rapidly lossing teh cabbabilitty tou write rite.,.
I’ll be back friends, I’ll be back.

PS. THANK YOU MR. ADMIN! Lets be honest-if it weren’t for you, those who love the KOTOR saga the way it was would simply not have a voice. A million of the freshest and most succulent Kudos to you! Cheers!

Hmmhm, disappointed I am, TOR will MMO be. Even tho I’m not going to bash the game, I do hope that they will finish this game before shooting it out to the stores. AOC had potential, but the bugs and the fact it wasn’t even half ready for the public just were too much IMO. Make the game work(!), give the galaxy for us to play with (I really am looking forward to making a jawa), work on the storyline and overall just give it something more than WOW has (I doubt there’s a big market for just another copy) and I’m sure you’ll be thanked later on + SW trademark is something that can make this happen.
