Story in STAR WARS: The Old Republic
Some great info on the storyline for The Old Republic has been released via the official Old Republic website. Even though it is a MMO, it still sounds awesome and I may be just compelled to try it. I’ve bene having a great response to our last post, where we announced our first contest! Be sure to check it out here! for your chance to win a free Star Wars Video Game of your choice!
The article talks about your character development through-out the game:
“In Star Wars: The Old Republic you will have an emotional attachment to your character and face decisions in the game which will guide the development of your character and determine the direction of the character’s storyline. Whatever your choices may be, you’ll still be the hero (or villain) of an epic storyline which gives extra meaning to the other gameplay pillars. Character advancement will be much more than coming up with efficient statistics. Exploration will be about experiencing new places, new people, and new stories. Finally, instead of just reaching for that next level, you will be engaging in visceral combat reminiscent of the Star Wars movies where you’re motivated to fight for more than just yourself – but also for a cause.
We believe that choice is the most gripping and crucial element of these stories. The team has left a lot open so that your decisions have a significant impact on the way the storylines and the characters develop. Because each storyline offers multiple paths, Star Wars: The Old Republic writers create much more content than you would expect from a linear game storyline. In fact, Star Wars: The Old Republic will contain more story content than all other BioWare games combined. As with the original Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™, some stories intertwine, and some decisions may lead your character down a completely unexpected path. Smaller choices may yield small results, but on some occasions may later lead to larger consequences.”
As well as your class and some information about their new companion system:
“In Star Wars: The Old Republic, your class means more than just the amount of hit points your character has or how many skills you can choose. Each class has its own epic storyline that will drive the majority of your character’s journey. These storylines reflect the spirit of the class you chose, some more traditionally heroic, some more sinister. Class-specific content allows you to play through a tailored experience based on your choices.
Along your journey, you’ll come across a feature that made the original Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™ series so immersive – companion characters. Companion characters are your non-player character (NPC) allies, each with their own personality, thoughts, and struggles. Companions will fight by your side and get caught up in your storyline. You might even get caught up in theirs as well. Because each of your companions has a mind of his or her own, they will react to the choices you make and may support or even turn against you.
With compelling choices, class-specific epic storylines, and fully developed companions characters, we are making a strong commitment to put the concept of story at the forefront of Star Wars: The Old Republic. By focusing on these story-driven features, our goal is that you will become immersed in your character and others around you, explore exciting environments, and in the end, get lost in your own Star Wars saga. Stay tuned to the official website for more updates and behind the scenes looks at Star Wars: The Old Republic.”

I commented on the why they aren’t listening thing but it didn’t show up. Well it probably did and i just cant find it. where do I look?
Darth Conley on Sun, 7th Dec 2008 10:16 pm
Well I’m relieved that they didn’t completely kill The KOTOR series.
Serondil on Mon, 8th Dec 2008 2:22 am
So, that actually sounds very good…
Alltough I’m not really sure i believe what i’m hearing.. Kotor 3 will have more storyline content then all bioware games combined… sounds great
So i guess most of the panicking was not necesairy since it looks like the original concept is being preserved.
Now let’s just wait on some info on the prices.. (still hoping it won’t be pay – to – play)

Indeed, it seems wonderfull. But I highly doubt that any of this can in fact be achieved. The sentence
“Whatever your choices may be, you’ll still be the hero (or villain) of an epic storyline which gives extra meaning to the other gameplay pillars”
has absolutely no meaning to me when you think in a MMO. the way I see it, a hero is, by definition, an exception. How can a world have thousands of exceptions, it does not make sense. But I won´t underestimate the producers, who knows, maybe someone had a fantastic idea that is hard to explain, and has a great team to work with (because he is gonna need all the help he can get), and is betting his life on it.
Despite this, I am still hugely disappointed with this MMO thing. A fantastic, memorable game never starts with the “I am going to make a great game” attitude: if in the end of the project one realizes that everything is fitting
perfectly well, that the game is brilliant, than you start with the whole propaganda. That´s why I think this whole project is going to fail in the end. I mean, they will sell a lot, there will be many new features, it will be a fun game, but it won´t be half as meaningfull as the previous KOTOR games.
Darth Conley on Mon, 8th Dec 2008 9:48 pm
I personally think that I would like this game better than WoW. Because it will be futuristic instead of old school. I think a lot of players from WoW will convert to Kotor 3 or at least try it if they hear of it. I for one am going to play Kotor 3 no matter what, I mean at least try it. And I think that this will be better than Star Wars Galaxies, because it had a bad story board, good character customization, and I liked the player versus player. And I have a question, will there be player versus player? I don’t think I’ve heard anything about it yet. That’s probably going to get players to stick to the game. I stuck to WoW, Runescape, Guild War, and other online games because of the players versus players, because that’s continual, not just a short or long storyboard.
L on Mon, 8th Dec 2008 9:50 pm
How can we al exist in the same universe if we all have the choice to do somthing different at the same time on the same disicsion. To do that they will probably make a lot of the game instanced…..or maybe I’m way off, just spitballin.
Rockkidmetal on Wed, 10th Dec 2008 8:49 am
Right on! I agree with you 100% of the way. How indeed can we all excist in the same universe with the ability to all make the exact same decisions? Though the probability is low, we COULD all be the same, all the way from alignment to looks to the choices we make, we could all do everything the same and that just takes all the uniqueness out of our characters. We need a Kotor 3 where it’s just us and our compainions versus the galaxy, that is what makes not only the game, but also us unique be on belief. I just hope this isn’t really the Kotor 3 we’ve been waiting for almost six years for.

Hay ppl see the light… This is jus like Force Unleashed… Marketin strategy.. Generate lot of hype so that everyone pre orders it… that way the get 1mill + sales in a weeks time of release, and it wont even deliver half the satisfaction… After customer satisfaction has never been one of their goals… since the release of jedi outcast
John on Thu, 11th Dec 2008 6:42 pm
No one ever said Lucas Arts isn’t good at marketing.
That is, of course, what this is. They are still trying to pull in the KOTOR fanbased. The inherent nature of an MMO makes it impossible to have a real story like they are suggesting. Every story has an ending. When, pray tell, does a story end in an MMO?
DacenVellia on Thu, 11th Dec 2008 7:00 pm
It may sound good, but it’s still going to be a MMO.
JOhn on Sat, 13th Dec 2008 7:48 am
Yeah Guys Like look at guys like Warcraft yea i bet it is fun but there is no storyline an for me an i think ya’ll are the same that the story is the backbone an heart of the recent kotor games when i first played kotor on xbox i could’nt put it down i played it like 3438493593834 times “mom was getting worried”lol, but now am not even going to buy it, its going to be just like Force Unleash there going to be saying this an that, you can do this, you’ll get to see that, its just a trick, an i heard that was a major put down.
Someon3 on Sat, 13th Dec 2008 12:02 pm
Hm, ye nice, but still… Looks like tehy focus more than 75% of the game on the 4th pillar: storyline. I hope they won’t mess it up bigtime, cuz they’ll have to rewrite it all XD
Brian Patnaude on Sat, 13th Dec 2008 2:11 pm
I don’t mean to sound disrespectful but how are they killing the series? This game looks amazing and if they put everything They’ve been promising into this game it’s going to end up better then the other two. If you don’t like TOR then here is my advice. Don’t buy the game. If you think that Bioware is killing the series then stop ruining other people’s fun and don’t comment. It’s kinda like Movies today. If you don’t like it, then don’t go. We get that you don’t like it but a good portion of people do. So stop ruining our fun. Thank you.
EXT64 on Sun, 14th Dec 2008 11:13 am
Excuse me Brian, but the whole point of this site is to allow users to post their views, both positive and negative, of the game. If you only want to hear gushing praise, go to one of the fanboy official sites.
As to whether it is killing the series, it is not because it is NOT a KOTOR game. It is just another Star Wars MMO but set in the KOTOR era.
Also, that is a huge if (“if they put everything they’ve been promising…”). I can tell you now they won’t because they never have and never will. They are trying to get the hype up and hope they will get sales out of the KOTOR title.
And finally, will it be good? If they ever release it, I bet it will be a very fun MMO and possibly even successful. I personally would enjoy running around the KOTOR world and interacting with others online, however not if I have to pay a subscription (any more than $20 a year, maybe) and it would not be a replacement to the KOTOR series, just another fun game.
Gl-lOST on Sun, 14th Dec 2008 7:55 pm
The game looks like its set after the death of darth vader.. hmm it might also be a chalenge to make PvP balanced (Lightsaber<Blaster) They should let others make more characters to view all parts of the history. Think about KoToR 1. There is so much information more then you relize. Think about the time when Revan ripped off or helped that Lady trying to sell a Wraith Plate on Tatooine tahts a part of the star wars history. They should be carfull about what they do
JMC@Mexico on Tue, 16th Dec 2008 7:47 pm
In this case even if the story (A giganormously big IF) is good, I think that a million different paths for the same story just won’t do, even if they managed to make it work, any other darkside, light side, whatever-they-call-it-side, could just make a choice to wipe the floor with your ass, and then what? restart everything? hear the ending from another more skilled in combat than you? the only way that could be avoided it would be to divide the story into several “Organizations” and then make a super intergalactic conflict set 3700 years before the original SW storyline.

So.. all this time waiting and when its finally announced my worst fears become reality. WHY AN MMO?!?!? Not to sound mean because I know some ppl actually L.O.V.E the idea, but with the traditional standard of this game ‘IT WILL NOT WORK’.
I love the star wars franchise.. ive always loved it and of course I feel in love with Kotor. I even liked KOTOR 2, tho some changes could have been made. But this is where I have to draw the line for my passion of gaming.. I once bought into the whole idea of MMOs, but destroying kotor this way isn’t right. I had hoped for so much when I heard about SW: FU, I even pre-ordered it and all, and like many have stated.. they once again didn’t deliver.
Good luck to any that buy this game, but I think I will just set this one out.

One thing for,MMo’s are not meant for story telling.Kotor 3 will suck if it is an mmo.No depth in a story at all.The developers must scratch this peice of junk as soon as possible, and switch over to a singleplayer for Xbox 360.It is the right thing to do and the developers know it.It’s what the TRUE FANS WANT!! Watching the video proved this,IT LOOKED AWFULL.HORRIBLE. Just make things right and every one happy little Star Wars nerds and SCATCH THE MMO.

Those guys who want to play MMO aren’t KOTOR fans. They’re people that were disappointed with other MMO’s and hope this one will be a good game! They should complain to SW galaxies about their loss of interest in the game, not destroy a game series as great as KOTOR.

… i dont think this game is about revan or the exile… have you noticed that they say STAR WARS: the old republic… and not STAR WARS KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC 3… i think that this is just an mmorpg with fammiliar characters… (its my theory that they are actualy making another game for the XBOX 360 in which the story is continued)… please note that all of this is just theory and not proven fact.

For those who want to try the MMO, please be their guests. Personally, I feel that Lucas Arts, EA and BioWare are starting to get that itchy feeling under their ‘white collars’, the one that tells them that maybe they screwed themselves with the large console gamer base. EA whose success has been met on consoles has officially declared that they have not found success on that front? Ouch, well there was a good way to slap the faces of the fans that made your company; since Need for Speed, Madden, Medal of Honor and the Godfather franchises have met success mainly at the hands of console gamers…can you say duh!
To be fair, Lucas Arts also slapped the face of the fans, the making of this into an MMO will hurt George Lucas in many ways, but money sometimes clouds the mind. Just remember all of this Lucas Arts, especially since before the XBOX game console your success was near twenty-percent! It was the titles that they produced for the XBox system, whether good or bad that netted a large fan base and the most success they had seen in their company’s history and that is a fact. And while I know Lucas Arts is trying to steal the World of Warcraft fandom, I would like to say this to you…”Doh!” Because not only did you drop the ball with Knights of the Old Republic fans, you are making nothing but bad marks with the fans. Fans asked for more movies, they were told there would be a live action series, remember all the hub-bub, instead we got another cartoon series and a cheesy movie which was the prelude to the series itself. Ouch… And to top it off, the fans who wanted a good game got The Force Unleashed, hoping it was a mark of things to come, especially for the KOTOR fanbase and we got smacked again. George Lucas please understand that all that money you role around in was because of your fans, not self made, as I stated before and this holds true – “Money does not make the games, the gamers do!” But to think you will chip into the Warcraft fandom is stupidity, partially because unlike you, they have listened to the fans, a live action movie is in pre-production as we speak and they have generated a larger fanbase with their never-ending supply of additional game expansions.
Now, I would like to blast BioWare…but of the three companies involved in this debacle, they may be the ones who gain from this…why? The answer is so simple, there are several divisions of BioWare and the KOTOR MMO is just one, and remember that BioWare met success at making PC games, unlike the other two brainchild companies in this ’screw-up’ who were both made by console gamers. BioWare found they could have great success on the console systems with Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire and Mass Effect, all which have been award winning and have sold mega volumes on both the console, but also on the PC…and right now their is the division of BioWare working on Dragon Age: Origins, whoops! So while the MMO debacle will hurt the reputation of Lucas Arts and EA, BioWare though owned by EA will rebound with another hit game that will supply the console gamers with what they wanted. And the fans will likely forget their part in the KOTOR MMO, while Lucas Arts and EA remained stained by it.
Yes, this is a marketing strategy because at this point they have spent top dollar to develop the game and it is getting poor ratings because of the console fans whom were cut out of the loop and because not everyone likes the MMO crap…but for those fans who do like MMO games and are console gamers, there is a game coming soon, the Age of Conan: The Hyborian Tales will still be released, likely at the same time as Knights of the Old Republic to satisfy those hurt gamers…but the RPG fans will not be so forgiving, luckily though there are several RPG games in development for them all.
Lancane on Tue, 30th Dec 2008 2:14 pm
Jalyn, originally Knights of the Old Republic III was in production at BioWare’s facility in Canada. But the product was one of many which were scrapped when EA purchased BioWare and Lucas Arts decided to cut production on several titles in development or pre-production. They instead decided to run with the MMO Knights of the Old Republic, which will likely hurt them far more then anything at this point. First off their try at Galaxies hurt them, so many fans will not be so eager to run out and buy Knights of the Old Republic remembering the issues with Galaxies, but also the economy will play a factor, many software manufacturers have stated that in this economy, MMOs’ are far more likely to take a loss then standard RPGs’. The other big issue is that they cut out the console gamers and the gamers who like RPGs’ and not MMOs’, so they cut out many of those who would have purchased the game in the first place and on several fronts…
If they decide to make Knights of the Old Republic III, or still develop it, then they would have announced it publicly to thwart the bad blood they have created with the MMO…don’t hold your breath Jalyn, there is not KOTOR III…just us fans who wished there was!
Darth Thomar on Sat, 3rd Jan 2009 5:18 am
Seems to me that doing it this way will open up more space and interaction that you can’t get from a four discs set. Had the first two been on the net like this will be, it would still be a bunch of people with different outcomes. Only difference I can tell is that you won’t be able to find time to play twelve times and get different reactions. Won’t be able to save before that BIG decision and then load the save game and make a different one. My only concern outside of storyline is how long will I have to play before I can do it again. I plan on going the Anakin way. I will align with the Republic, become disgusted with it and then go dark and thus become a dark lord of the Sith and f*** s**t up! Just hunt all the Republic lover and Jedi. But…how long do I have to play to see what it’s like to start good and stay good, or star bad then go good, or start bad and stay bad? Then, suppose I don’t want to be a Force user at all? Suppose I play as male, or as female. KOTOR was great because each time you play, you can choose between two genders then from there choose class of person then from there choose what time of alignment with the force and then from there what three classes within that alignment you want! Can an MMO supply this? This is the post that should be posted in each place concerns are left, not who’s “killing” the franchise. I love Fable2 because I get to choose my story, but KOTOR is the greatest…

Kit Andrews on Thu, 8th Jan 2009 9:48 am
My main concern is that in the first 2 games your character had an epic storyline that effected the fate of the galaxy, i was looking forward to traveling into the unknown regions to find Reven and the exile to either save or destroy the republic, while an mmorpg would be able to give character specific storyline , without the galaxy effecting decisions it will bring no closure to the storyline i had become so enthralled with.

All I ask for is this. If Bioware makes this game, and they make it well, that they don’t go changing the gameplay I fall in love with. Sony effictively killed SWG for me by changing its gameplay over and over again. As for everyone who has already choosen their side of this battle, realize this. EA is EA, Lucas is Lucas, Bioware is Bioware, Life is Life, and Death is just a new frontier. You can’t change what is, and you can’t change what will be in the end. Bioware will make this game how the make it, and all we can hope is that it is as magnificent as KotOR was. We can try to guide them with our thoughts and our input, but they are the ones who call the shots rightfully. Don’t hate something becasue it is an unknown to you. I can remember when KotOR itself was another unknown. But, please continue trying to help Bioware shape this game into something extraordinary by giving them your thoughts and opinions. Just try not to be to critical of them until you see the finished product. I WILL play TOR, as will my friends and family. As for whether we like or hate it, the only thing we can do is be patient, wait, and hope for the best.

No other RPG, no MMO, and no World of Warcraft game has ever, nor will ever come close to the KOTOR series. KOTOR focused more on the storyline and the theme rather than the graphics and engines themselves. That is what made them great. Taking a decent engine with decent gfx and making it superior (in my opinion) to any recent game to date, whose engine and graphics are a thousand times better.
When I played both games I cared about my character and my companions; when my character was betrayed I felt betrayed, no other RPG has had this effect on me. Hell I wasn’t even that much of a Star Wars fan. The themes, the ideas, the storyline, and the characters of KOTOR 1 & 2 stand at the top of the list for any type of game, RPG or not.
I do not think an MMO can continue such a good story and keep all the emotion and ideas of the other two games. They could mirror Rockstar, by having multiplayer as an additional feature outside of the storyline, but I seriously doubt this MMO can live up to its’ predecessors, even if it is not technically KOTOR3. To us, the fans, it will be KOTOR3. And thats all that matters.
