Source: EuCantina.net

“According to video game site VG246,

LucasArts president Darrell Rodriguez has told GamesIndustry.biz that while no specific business model details have yet been announced for the forthcoming BioWare-developed MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic, a variety of options might be utilized – including subscriptions and micro-transactions – in order to appeal globally.

For those readers wondering, subscription is a business model currently used on Star Wars: Galaxies; you pay a monthly fee and you play the game. Micro-transaction means you pay for only the game itself and for whatever additional content you want. Normally it’s not needed for the game, but the balance for that in some MMOs makes it seem like those who pay for stuff have an advantage. We will have to wait and see, but having both would be very unique and interesting– a staple of both Bioware and Lucasarts.

It looks like Mythic Entertainment (Creators of Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer online) will be helping out Bioware with the forcoming Star Wars game, The Old Republic.

Courtesy of Eurogamer.com:

“BioWare has told Eurogamer that Mythic Entertainment will “without a doubt” help out on Star Wars: The Old Republic, as there are “absolutely opportunities to share and learn” within the newly formed RPG/MMO group.

As for BioWare helping Warhammer Online, however, co-founder Greg Zeschuk is not so sure.

“I think we always have lots of opinions to share, Ray and I,” said Zeschuk in an interview published today. “We’ve both played Warhammer, and actually I’ve still been playing it on and off for a while, so I think for us it’s not to much a popularity boost as just the fact that we can probably bring perspectives to the table that will be new and perhaps helpful to the guys from Mythic in the same way from an online perspective they can certainly share with us.

“To give credit to the Austin team [making Star Wars: The Old Republic], we have a number of serious MMO veterans on there, so it’s certainly not neophytes, but there’s absolutely opportunities to share and learn things back and forth.”

BioWare’s other co-founder, Ray Muzyka, will head the RPG/MMO group, with Zeschuk installed as group creative officer. But despite the reshuffle, Zeschuk reckons “not that much” has changed.

“I think because we had been already working side by side within EA, we had already been sharing stuff back and forth, so there wasn’t any, ‘Oh no, now we’re forced to share things, how terrible.’ We’ll just continue what we’re doing, which is actually sharing technology ideas,” he explained.

“I think it will work very much like the Austin studio. Austin is one of the BioWare studios, but they’re very independent. They manage the internal processes, they run it like a BioWare studio, but in the Austin vision.

“They’ve got stuff they’re working on, Mythic’s got stuff they’re working on, and it’s going to be a great team there. We’ve known the people there for quite a while, so in general, they’ve got their agenda, we’ve got our goals, they’ve got their goals, and what Ray and I do at an overall group level is try and make sure that everything is aligned and all the sharing is happening and everyone’s supported and getting the resources they need,” added Zeschuk.

Star Wars: The Old Republic still has no release date, and Warhammer Online hasn’t announced any drastic changes since the merger.

BioWare, of course, has plenty of other projects to worry about: Dragon Age: Origins in particular, which launches on 23rd October for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.”

Holy shit!! This is great news! I figured with the release of the Old Republic, there would be no chance at all for a Knights of the Old Republic 3, just for the simple fact that all the developers keep saying that TOR is Knights of the Old Republic 3, 4, 5, 6, 7+ all wrapped into one game.

This does not mean that it will happen but it’s definitely something to give a little hope, especially to the KOTOR fans who do not want the MMO. Anyway, reported by EUCantina.net, in a recent interview with GameBanshee, Obsidian’s CEO Feargus Urquhart had said the following:

“I hope LucasArts gives us a shot at making KotOR III.“

That is so awesome!!

Here is the post by EUCantina.net:

Since 2004, Obsidian Entertainment, the creative studio behind Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords has stated their interest in created a third game in series. When Bioware and Lucasarts announced their MMO The Old Republic, fans figured they would have to settle with that being “Kotor 3, 4,5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.”

Well, that’s not exactly true; not if Obsidian’s CEO Feargus Urquhart has his way with things. In an interview recently with GameBanshee, Urquhart replied to being asked if he thought there would ever be a “true” Kotor III by saying,

“I don’t really know. A part of me hopes that there will be, because I think we can do things in the more single player story based RPGs that you just can’t do in an MMORPG. Like I said, I really hope that there is one, with BioWare busy on the MMO; I hope LucasArts gives us a shot at making KotOR III.“

Not a surprise there, really. Obsidian and Lucasarts both have acknowledge faults in timing for Kotor II, and many think, if time had been given, both could have made Kotor II better and more complete.

Some great info on the storyline for The Old Republic has been released via the official Old Republic website. Even though it is a MMO, it still sounds awesome and I may be just compelled to try it. I’ve bene having a great response to our last post, where we announced our first contest! Be sure to check it out here! for your chance to win a free Star Wars Video Game of your choice!

The article talks about your character development through-out the game:

“In Star Wars: The Old Republic you will have an emotional attachment to your character and face decisions in the game which will guide the development of your character and determine the direction of the character’s storyline. Whatever your choices may be, you’ll still be the hero (or villain) of an epic storyline which gives extra meaning to the other gameplay pillars. Character advancement will be much more than coming up with efficient statistics. Exploration will be about experiencing new places, new people, and new stories. Finally, instead of just reaching for that next level, you will be engaging in visceral combat reminiscent of the Star Wars movies where you’re motivated to fight for more than just yourself – but also for a cause.

We believe that choice is the most gripping and crucial element of these stories. The team has left a lot open so that your decisions have a significant impact on the way the storylines and the characters develop. Because each storyline offers multiple paths, Star Wars: The Old Republic writers create much more content than you would expect from a linear game storyline. In fact, Star Wars: The Old Republic will contain more story content than all other BioWare games combined. As with the original Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™, some stories intertwine, and some decisions may lead your character down a completely unexpected path. Smaller choices may yield small results, but on some occasions may later lead to larger consequences.”

As well as your class and some information about their new companion system:

“In Star Wars: The Old Republic, your class means more than just the amount of hit points your character has or how many skills you can choose. Each class has its own epic storyline that will drive the majority of your character’s journey. These storylines reflect the spirit of the class you chose, some more traditionally heroic, some more sinister. Class-specific content allows you to play through a tailored experience based on your choices.

Along your journey, you’ll come across a feature that made the original Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™ series so immersive – companion characters. Companion characters are your non-player character (NPC) allies, each with their own personality, thoughts, and struggles. Companions will fight by your side and get caught up in your storyline. You might even get caught up in theirs as well. Because each of your companions has a mind of his or her own, they will react to the choices you make and may support or even turn against you.

With compelling choices, class-specific epic storylines, and fully developed companions characters, we are making a strong commitment to put the concept of story at the forefront of Star Wars: The Old Republic. By focusing on these story-driven features, our goal is that you will become immersed in your character and others around you, explore exciting environments, and in the end, get lost in your own Star Wars saga. Stay tuned to the official website for more updates and behind the scenes looks at Star Wars: The Old Republic.”

I am seeing lots more disgruntled comments.. and a few good comments coming. One was a really long one but I wanted to address this:

Well, I suppose this all leads to the question of why aren’t they listening to us.

Why? Because it’s impossible to please everyone. It would be nice if they came out with the MMO and then release a single player version of it to please both sides, but that’s probably not going to happen. I’m not sure whether it would take too much time or too much money?

So, I thought i’d run a little contest. I’d like to hear people’s thoughts on why they aren’t listening to us. It seems like there are two sides to this dilemma, the side that wants and loves the idea of a MMO and the side just wants a normal KOTOR single player game. It’s kind of like how everyone wanted Multiplayer for The Force Unleashed… that didn’t happen.

Just reply to this thread with your reason why they’re not listening to us, the best answer and comment will win themselves a free Star Wars PC game of their choice!

Make sure you leave your email address! The winner will be contacted on December 15th and their free game will be shipped out the following day.

I was thinking of adding a forum as well for people to discuss our dilemma. Let me know if you’d be interested.

I noticed we got mentioned on the official The Old Republic community and I just wanted to point out a couple things. Obviously there is a lot of tension between the people who want The Old Republic MMO and those who don’t want it.

Now this was the original post:

“Oh, but there are! You wouldn’t find many of those here although. And I really doubt, that the majority wants a MMO. There could be more, but it surely isn’t the majority!

Just look here for example what those guys have to say:

http://kotor3.net/

…and frankly said, I think so, too.”

To be honest, I would say that there really is no majority, there’s a lot of people who want it and there’s a lot who don’t… and then there are the people who just don’t care and will take anything as long as it has Star Wars on it.

Now the next post wrote:

If they had complaints why wouldnt they post it here on say the offical site rather thena fan site set up for a game thats not comfirmed?

I’ll tell you why, because when people go to an official forum, they either like the game or they’re harassed and ridiculed for not liking it. “If you don’t want the game why are you here?”, “Get lost troll”, ect..

It’s not just this game, it’s for everything. Try rolling over to another official forum and express dislike for what they’re doing.

I just thought it was interesting, how much people, at least who visit this site, arn’t looking forward to the MMO. I’m not that excited for it, but, chances are i’ll play it, and you never know, I just may love it.

Just remember that anything posted here is our own personal opinions, post away your comments, good and bad, I love to hear them!

Anyway, a little bit of new that was posted awhile ago.

EA and LucasArts executives have told videogaming247 that they are targeting World of Warcraft-sized success with Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The BioWare-developed MMO was announced this week and you can find everything there is to know about it (not much, unfortunately) here on Eurogamer. LucasArts is publishing the game, but EA, as owner of BioWare, is also involved.

“We have very high expectations for this,” EA Games president Frank Gibeau told vg247. “Just look at the base of Star Wars fans, plus what BioWare can do. Trust me: we want to win. EA’s reputation is for wanting to win.

“This is going to be a powerful category and there’s lots of ways to compete in this category,” Gibeau continued. “[Blizzard] created a much larger opportunity for everybody else, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to stay that way.”

LucasArts’ online chief Tom Nichols chimed in, betting that The Old Republic’s emphasis on story would bring record numbers of players to massively multiplayer gaming.

“Our goal is to show that by bringing storytelling to the genre that we can attract an even wider audience. Plus, we have the benefit of this huge brand, which has done very, very well for nearly 30 years.”

Asked specifically if the game would be bigger than WOW, Nichols said: “I think this game has that potential.”

The executives are the first in the MMO industry to be bold enough to predict that they can take on and best Blizzard’s record number of subscriptions.

Star Wars: The Old Republic has no release date as yet, and has only been confirmed for PC, although Gibeau suggested that a console version was “under consideration”.

I’ve gotten a big response in the comments from my last post. Seems ages vary quite a bit, from 11 years to almost 40 and for the most part everyone of them seems to hate the fact that the new KOTOR is going to be a MMO. Very surprising indeed. I think there was one or two comments that said that they like it being a MMO and a couple that said that they would play it anyway.

Well besides the fact that it is going to be a MMO, the new gameplay screenshots look actually pretty sweet. Keep sending in your feedback, I love it! Check out the new screenshots below:

I’m curious at the age bracket of these negative comments, whether it’s the 20+ generation that hates the fact that this is a MMO and the younger generation that loves it. Feel free to post your age in your comments, i’m very curious.

I’m 26 and I hate the fact that it will be a MMO. I loved KOTOR & KOTOR 2 and I think that, that is the way that it should have went.

Anyway, check out this exclusive podcast on the upcoming The Old Republic:

I’m hearing a lot of controversy over the fact that the new Knights of the Old Republic is going to be a MMO. I’m actually surprised that so many people don’t like MMO’s. Personally, I wasn’t really that excited that it will be an MMO, i’m not an MMO player.

I do have a life, I work and spend time with my lovely fiance, I just don’t have time to get into a MMO, nor do I really wish to pay a monthly fee to play it. Where as if it was a regular Knights of the Old republic, I can sit down and play it whenever I have the time, with no fee’s.

I guess i’m not the only one who has these views as well. I’m sure it will still be a great game though, and I would like to try it someday, but unfortunately, that probably won’t be until i’m retired.

Anyway check out some concepts!

VideoGaming247.com has posted a video of the entire LucasArts/Bioware presentation that took place on October 21st. Unfortunatley there’s no actual footage of video play, but it is still a great source of what’s to come. Check it out below.

“LucasArts passed over a video edit of the entire reveal presentation of BioWare MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic today, held in San Francisco last week. Watch it after the break.

The movie is nearly 20 minutes long, and contains large sections of talk from BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, as well as talk-throughs on art style and level design from senior developers at the studio.

There are several sections in there from LucasArts president Darrell Rodriguez.

And no: there’s no footage of gameplay. Two trailers were shown at the event – one on the history of the KOTOR franchise, and one showing early gameplay – but both have been edited out. Apparently there’s a movie exclusive deal in place with a US broadcaster, so no such luck for you, we’re afraid.”
